This course has been specifically designed for judiciary interpreters with a Spanish endorsement. The course’s objective is to review the concept of court interpretation and the niceties of the legal language, in order to understand the importance of maintaining the register and style of the legal language of the courtroom, as mandated by Canon 1 of the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility for licensed court interpreters.

“ENGLISH > SPANISH LEGALESE TANTAMOUNT: CRIMINAL LAW”
During this class we will review the translation of concepts in criminal law, starting from the Judiciary, court personnel and the parties; moving on to common law, jurisprudence, code, law, act and statute; criminal action in Texas; then the differences between mens rea – dolo – culpa, and the classification of offenses considering their seriousness (felonies & misdemeanors); and the translation of offenses (Terroristic threat, Deadly conduct, Criminal mischief, Criminal trespass, Burglary, Theft and Robbery, among others) using reference materials; ending with punishment.
